Key Historic & Cultural Attractions

1. Astoria Column

A 125-foot tall column atop Coxcomb Hill, decorated with murals depicting regional history. You can climb a spiral staircase (~164 steps) for sweeping 360° views of Astoria, the Columbia River, and surrounding landscapes.

2. Columbia River Maritime Museum

A museum focused on maritime and river history, shipwrecks, the Columbia River Bar, and coastal navigation. Look for their new expansion in 2026.

3. Captain George Flavel House Museum

A Victorian-era house museum (Queen Anne style) built in 1885, formerly owned by river pilot George Flavel. It gives a window into Astoria’s very historic past of maritime shipping and travel.

4. Oregon Film Museum

Housed in the old Clatsop County Jail, this museum highlights films made in Oregon (notably The Goonies, Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy, etc.).

5. Lewis & Clark National Historic Park / Fort Clatsop

North of Astoria (in the surrounding region) is the reconstructed Fort Clatsop, where the Lewis & Clark expedition spent the winter of 1805-1806. Trails, exhibits. and ranger programs are available.

6. Astoria’s Famous Bridge Drive

This long truss bridge spans the Columbia River from Oregon to Washington. Enjoy this spectacular drive across the river, check out a few spots on the Washington side before returning back across.

7. Astoria Victory Monument

Also called the Doughboy Monument or Soldiers’ Monument. this historic monument is located at the intersection of Columbia Avenue and West Marine Drive.

8. “Goonies House” (Private Landmark / Film Location)

The house used as the “Goonies house” in the 1985 film is in Astoria. We’ll tell you how to find it guiding you by txt! (note: it is a private residence just looking!).

9. Heritage Museum / Clatsop County Historical Society

This museum (in the former courthouse) covers local and regional history-from indigenous presence to modern times. 

🌿 Outdoor, Scenic & Nature Highlights

1.  Astoria Riverwalk Trail

A paved trail along the Columbia River shoreline. You’ll walk past old cannery buildings, docks, vantage points for watching ships, and sea lions.

2. Cathedral Tree Trail

A relatively short hike (1.6 mi round-trip) accessible from the Astoria Column area. Good for stretching legs and enjoying forest views.

3. Pier 39 & Waterfront boardwalk

A pier area with shops, views, and strolling paths along the water’s edge.

4. Ecola State Park (nearby)

Though slightly outside Astoria, this coastal park offers dramatic ocean views, hiking trails, tide pools, and scenic photo spots.

1.  Fort George Brewery

A popular local craft brewery in Astoria. It’s a good stop to sample local brews and soak up the town atmosphere.

Morning:                                         

● Astoria Column

Start your day at the Astoria Column. Head up early to beat the crowds and enjoy those panoramic views over the Columbia River and the town. Take your time exploring the historical murals. 

● Captain George Flavel House Museum

Next, visit this beautifully preserved Victorian mansion to get a glimpse of the 19th-century lifestyle of a prominent river pilot.

Lunch:

● Lunch in Downtown Astoria

Enjoy lunch at one of our favorite staff picks—or there are plenty of charming spots downtown to make your own discovery

Afternoon:

● Columbia River Maritime Museum

Dive into the region’s maritime heritage with exhibits on fishing, shipwrecks, and the Columbia River Bar. It’s a must-see for history enthusiasts.

● Oregon Film Museum & Old Clatsop County Jail    

Wrap up the afternoon by exploring Astoria’s role in Hollywood history and touring the old jail that now houses the film museum.

Evening:

● Dinner & Stroll Along the Riverwalk

Finish your historical day with dinner at a riverfront restaurant, then take a leisurely walk along the historic Astoria Riverwalk as the sun sets.

Morning:

● Cathedral Tree Trail Hike

Begin your day with a refreshing hike on the Cathedral Tree Trail. It’s a gentle walk through lush coastal forest leading to a giant Sitka spruce

● Lewis & Clark National Historic Park / Fort Clatsop Although it’s also historical, this site is surrounded by nature trails and wooded areas. You can enjoy a blend of history and nature, walking the trails around the fort.

Lunch:

● Picnic or Lunch in Nature

Pack a picnic to enjoy at the park or head back into Astoria for a casual lunch.

Afternoon

● Astoria Piers for Sea Lion Viewing

Spend your afternoon exploring the Piers and riverfront spots. Keep an eye (and ear) out for the resident sea lions that like to lounge on the docks.

●  Ecola State Park Visit (Optional, Nearby)

If you’re up for a short drive, head out to Ecola State Park for stunning coastal views, coastal trails, and perhaps a bit of beachcombing.

Evening:

●  Sunset at the Waterfront or Astoria Column Return Conclude your nature-themed day by catching the sunset from a scenic spot—either back at the Astoria Column for a twilight view or along the waterfront.
